Commercial Diplomacy

Main purpose of job:

Support the delivery of the BHC Nairobi Prosperity Strategy.  The UK wants to see growth in Kenya whilst broadening the opportunities for British economic interests.

Roles and responsibilities 

Ensure the effective operation of the cross-Mission Prosperity Board. The Board works to a strategy agreed by FCO, DFID and DIT.  Responsible for arranging meetings, agreeing the agenda, preparing records of meetings and ensuring follow-up on agreed actions.

Working closely with the Head of the Prosperity team, work with a network of Kenyan business, regulatory and Government contacts to deliver high-level visits and events, including the twice yearly UK/ Kenya Economic Development Forum.

Support the “Graft busters” group, comprising colleagues from several departments working to tackle corruption in Kenya. Corruption is a high-profile Presidential priority, a major concern for the international community and an obstacle to growth and development.  Arrange meetings, agree agendas, prepare and circulate minutes and track actions.

Provide guidance and advice on key business environment issues; evaluate how to tackle constraints and to build on successes.

Support the fast growing work on Climate Change and Natural Resource Management.  Work with colleagues from several Government departments to develop a strategy that meets Kenyan needs and delivers UK objectives.

All High Commission staff are encouraged to participate in the wider, corporate life of the Mission as well as play a role in crisis management activities on an ad hoc basis.

The ideal candidate will be flexible and able to react to changing circumstances and priorities. Key to this will be the ability to step back and see the big picture, to understand where your work fits in and how to tailor your approach accordingly. You will work as part of a wider team that has members from multiple different UK government departments. This means that a good candidate will be open to challenging ideas and different perspectives on what they are trying to achieve but able to see how it all fits in.

You must also be able to think through a problem and identify solutions. This will include identifying the key stakeholders for each issue and thinking creatively about how best to persuade them to either the UK view or the Kenyan perspective.

–       Knowledge of the Kenyan economy and business environment

–       Excellent communications skills and self-confidence, professional competence, maturity and ability to deal with a broad range of governmental/ private sector officials

–       Fluent English

–       Excellent IT skills,

–       Capacity to work in groups, willing to work under pressure and able to reach tight deadlines

Working Patterns:

7:15 AM -4:00 PM – Monday to Thursday

7:45 AM -13:00PM – Friday

Flexible working could be arranged, including opportunities to work from home and possibility to work adjusted hours. The jobholder will not routinely have to work out of hours.  When assisting with visits there may be a need to work outside of normal working hours; the jobholder will be eligible for time off in lieu if required to work extra hours.
