Intern – Financial Inclusion at DanChurchAid (DCA)

DanChurchAid’s aim is to strengthen the world’s poorest people in their struggle for a life in dignity. DCA is seeking to recruit a dynamic and energetic Kenyan National for the position of Intern – Financial Inclusion from January 2021.  The intern will serve for a period of one year. The position is based in Kakuma, Turkana County and reports to the Project Officer – Financial Inclusion based in Kakuma.

The intern will support implementation of financial inclusion activities including VSLA, cash-based interventions, livelihoods and youth empowerment projects and related innovation and digitization.

Main Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Mobilizing, formation, training and monitoring of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) including the relevant digitisation.
  • Participate in the roll-out of innovations in financial inclusion and cash-based interventions including the voucher system for farm inputs, multi-purpose cash transfer and financing scheme for youth entrepreneurs.
  • Assist in mobilizing, training and mentoring refugees and host community youth participating in blended learning approaches to entrepreneurship, job seeking skills, and digital enabled jobs.
  • Support in day to day data management actions including filing of project data, regular data collection, analysis and updating of project data.
  • Facilitate and mentor the incentive staff and project beneficiaries to ensure successful implementation of financial inclusion activities.
  • Participate in developing action plans, monitoring, evaluation and learning as well as developing routine acticvity reports for financial inclusion.
  • Participate in staff training and capacity building.

Key Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree or diploma in Development Studies, in Business Management, or other related social sciences.
  • Good understanding of community development work, financial inclusion, cash-based interventions, entrepreneurship and/or employability skills promotion preferably in the context of refugees and refugee-hosting community’s.
  • Knowledge of Turkana West Sub-county in refugee camp or pastoral & agro-pastoralist settings is an added advantage.
  • Familiarity with digital learning platforms, teaching/facilitating adult learners is an added advantage.
  • Self-driven and results-oriented in challenging rural working environments.
  • Strong teamwork and people skills with ability to create trust, respect and interact with beneficiaries of all background and diversity.

About the Programme:

Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu – Swahili for ‘let our girls succeed’. This second programme is a holistic six-year project specifically designed to strengthen the transition of these girls from primary into either secondary school or alternative, productive livelihood pathways.

The project’s intervention logic is geared towards addressing complex, multi-dimensional and interrelated barriers which obstruct girls’ educational attainment and transition. Our work is focused on the most marginalised girls, so geographically we work in arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) and urban slums in Kenya.

Funded by UK aid through the Girls’ Education Challenge (GEC), the project covers 540 schools – 480 primary and 60 secondary schools – spread across 8 counties in arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) and urban slums): Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit.

It is implemented by a consortium of partners led by Education Development Trust; other members of this consortium are Concern Worldwide, Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT), Kesho Kenya and Pastoralists Girls Initiative (PGI).

About the Role:

The Instructional Coach is a field-based position supporting the delivery of learning outcomes under the Girls Education Challenge Transition (GEC T) Kenya –Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu (WWW project).

The post holder will provide leadership, coaching and mentoring support to class- room-based teacher education activities and will have primary responsibility for building the capacity of designated teachers to enhance learning outcomes for primary school pupils. The position will also contribute to addressing key challenges and issues impeding achievement of improved learning outcomes.

Main duties:

Rent, Service Charge, Parking, License Fees and VAT: Ensure the collection of due rent, service charge and any other payments as due under the leases and licenses in a timely and effective manner. Tasks include:

  1. Timely billing of rent, service charge, parking fees, license fees and VAT
  2. Ensuring that the tenant statements generated from the accounts department are correct and are delivered to the tenants in a timely manner.
  3. Subsequent monitoring and following up to ensure that the payments are made as due.
  4. Taking appropriate, timely and firm action in the event of default in payments, or risk thereof, by the tenants.

Services: Ensuring the proper rendering of the services on the property. This entails;

  1. Ensuring competitive and cost effective service providers or staff are deployed for the services.
  2. Suitable service contracts or agreements are in place.
  3. The services are rendered in the best manner possible, through regular monitoring, inspection and liaison meetings and communications with the service providers.
  4. Invoices submitted for payment for the services are correct and consistent with the service contracts, and are then paid in a timely manner.

Maintenance and Repairs: Ensure that the property structure, components, systems and equipment are kept in a good state of repair and redecoration.

Utilities: Ensure that utilities on the property are;

  1. Available and sufficient.
  2. Being used properly and in an efficient manner.
  3. Consumption is being monitored, bills received and payments made in a timely manner.
  4. Utility accounts and their holding and transfer are handled and maintained correctly.
  5. Tenant sub-meters are well maintained, functional and recovery billings from tenants are done monthly in a timely manner.
  • Statutory Payments: Ensure the land rates, ground rents and any other taxes and statutory payments are paid in the correct amounts, as due and in a timely manner.
  • Insurance: Ensure that proper and adequate insurance cover for the property is in place and premiums due thereon is paid properly and in time.
  • Property Staff: Directing and supervising the property staff mainly the caretaker and maintenance staff to ensure that they carry out their duties properly in line with their job descriptions and the management functions of the property.
  • Landlord statements and remittances: Ensuring in liaison with the accounts departments that property statements are generated and submitted to the landlord on a monthly or quarterly basis as due and that the monthly remittances to the landlords are made correctly and on time. Also ensuring that other periodic statements and reports to the landlord are submitted as required.
  • Landlords communication: Ensure that the landlord is constantly kept appraised and advised on the property in a proper and professional manner under the direction of the property manager, HOD or General Manager
  • Lease and License Agreements: Ensuring in liaison with the Agency Department that proper lease and license agreements are in place, duly signed by the parties and that the terms thereof are adhered to. Also ensure renewals are done at least six months before lease expiry date.
  • Tenancy Schedules: Ensure that proper, accurate and up to date Tenancy Schedule for the property is maintained.
  • Tenants Communications: Ensure appropriate communication and liaison with tenants on matters related to their tenancies and the management of the subject property.
  • Handovers and Handover Notes: Ensure that handovers by vacating tenants and handovers to incoming tenants are carried out properly and accurately filed in and that all matters relating thereto including closing and opening of utility accounts are attended to.
  • Supervisory and managerial responsibilities: Proper management and supervision of Property staff, Service providers and suppliers including maintenance and repairs providers
    Inspection and Reporting requirements: Property inspections should be carried out on a regular programmed basis and depending on any arising or current issues. Inspection reports should be done and follow ups on various actions done in a timely manner.
  • Other responsibilities: Proper handling and accounting for office and property equipment, materials, supplies.
  • Decisions to be made: Notifying the property manager, HOD or General Manager on all important aspects related to the proper execution of your duties and in particular any matters of an urgent legal nature.

Key Skills, Knowledge & Attributes:

  • Degree in Land Economics, Real Estate or equivalent from a recognized university.
  • Graduate member of the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in commercial property management.

Duties and Responsibilities

Network   Management

Job Requirements:

Experience & Technical Skills Required

  • At least 5 years of directly relevant experience in Public Relations and international development

Role Summary:

Responsible for developing and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships with customer representatives, ensuring Customer Satisfaction and maintaining all equipment models specific to the X-Ray modality.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Technical: Maintains all models specific to a modality in the assigned area.
  • Electronic/Mechanical: Total system level trouble-shooting on complex multi-symptom problems. Customer satisfaction: Daily interface with doctors and technicians on equipment status issues. Acts to ensure satisfaction to primary customers.
  • LCT (Local Customer Team): Assists in Account Sales visits; helps train others where necessary; identify Sales opportunities and communicate to account team.
  • Business growth: Assists in the growth and direction of business in his/her geographic area.
  • Productivity: Responsible for Warranty and PMS contract cost control.
  • Administration: Responsibly completes all administration tasks on time. Ensures timely completion of FMIs and PMS inspections documentation for assigned accounts.
  • Installation: Plays a leading role in complex and multifunctional rooms. Shares best practices. Maintain effective quality systems and programs compliant with ISO 9001 standard, according to the GE Service Quality Policy Statement.
  • Quality Specific Goals: Aware of and comply with the GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations as they apply to this job type/position. Complete all planned Quality & Compliance training within the defined deadlines. Identify and report any and all customer quality or compliance concerns immediately to the Quality Organization. Identify and report any personal quality or compliance concerns immediately to the Quality Organization. Insure timely dispatch closure. Ensure completion of all field modifications instructions (FMI’s) within prescribed timeframe. Participate in continuous improvement activities by identifying and appropriately escalating process and product quality gaps, providing solutions when possible.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Qualified to Degree level or equivalent.

Technical Analytical Skills. 2-4 Years Field Services Experience.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of a specific modality or multi-modalities.
  • Sought by others for guidance and advice.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum direction.
  • High work standards and quality.
  • Initiative and self-motivated.
  • Plans and organizes work effectively.
  • Excellent communication, listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong Customer skills; deals tactfully and effectively with differences of opinion, influences rather than directs.
