Job Summary

The East Africa Food Initiative team is offering an internship for Kenya-based candidates who combine solid academic credentials with curiosity, creativity, and passion for social impact. Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

The Intern will learn how to develop innovative solutions to improve nutrition security in resource-poor settings through cross-sector and multidisciplinary approaches involving nutrition, renewable energy, agriculture, business, environmental science, information technology, data science, and other fields. Specifically, the intern will:

  1. Support the Foundation’s work of advancing a more nourishing and sustainable food system with innovative breakthroughs in science, technology, and cross-sector engagement.
  2. Review and synthesize literature in nutrition, Ag-energy nexus, agribusiness value chains, supply chain innovations to inform decision making.
  3. Assist the Food team in the design, implementation, and on-going management of the Foundation’s new programs and further engagement with grantees and partners.
  4. Provide technical support to initiative staff, grantees and partners in Monitoring Evaluation, Research & Learning.
  5. Capture notes and clear next steps during Food team’s engagement with partners in the areas of food system transformation, energy access and poverty reduction.

Job Summary

The position of Manager, Demand and Enterprise Development (DED) for The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet is a vital part of our commitment to enable upward economic mobility for 1 billion people by accelerating access to and consumption of reliable electricity in underserved, low-income communities by 2030, with a specific goal of reaching a minimum annual consumption of 300 / kwh per capita in our target communities. The Manager, DED will work closely with the Managing Director, DED, other Global Energy Alliance staff and partners to create and refine a standardized DED strategy to support enterprise growth and economic development across our energy investments in various African countries. Building on that strategy, the manager will work with partners, to support the design and implementation of closely linked in-country projects to ensure that energy drives economic development, supports improved livelihoods and ensures energy investments translate to equitable impact, particularly for women. A critical component of the role will be to build private sector and other key partnerships, with a specific focus on enterprise development and agriculture partners to achieve our impact goals, as well as to support the creation of a network of in-country actors who will continue to support demand growth post Global Energy Alliance investments.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy and Design: 

  1. Support the development of a standardized strategy through which energy investments can drive enterprise development and economic growth. Tee up strategic choices and support executive decision making with a focus on both cross-country and in-country strategies.
  2. Deeply understand on-the-ground realities of the countries The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet works in – including politics, other stakeholders, opportunities, and risks and support the design and execution of DED interventions at the country level.
  3. Ensure the right data is being collected and we are tracking results over time and adjusting the strategy as needed.
  4. Ensure that gender is mainstreamed throughout DED investments and support in-country investments to drive gender equity through energy.

Partnership Development

  1. Support implementation partnerships at the country level, including but not limited to our target countries of Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Malawi and Uganda. Create and manage a process to engage with external partners, with a particular focus on the following topic areas – agriculture, enterprise development, e-mobility and other emerging areas that drive demand. Focus on private sector, government and donor partners to ensure demand side strategies are mainstreamed by others (for example – large ag programs embracing and utilizing DRE to drive agriculture productivity).
  2. Work specifically to ensure that demand side strategies support the growth of small and medium enterprises and are mainstreamed and supported by the private sector. Provide support to private sector companies to scale up the use of DRE power.

 Execution Management: 

  1. Support the selection of local organizations, and staff where appropriate. Work with these entities and individuals to design and implement projects and strengthen capabilities to deliver sustainable results over time
  2. Lead grant making/contracts/investments related to DED investments, including documentation for internal approvals, proposal development with partners and
  3. Oversee the work of grantees, contractors, and partner organizations in priority countries, tracking progress and learning and ensuring quality of their outputs and delivery against the goals of the DED strategy.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree in international development or a related field is preferred.
  2. 7-10 years of highly relevant experience with a focus on rural economic development, agricultural systems and/or development partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa. Knowledge of interventions to support gender equity preferred.
  3. Familiarity with the energy sector is preferred, however, if not, you should have an ability to quickly learn and synthesize technical content.
  4. Experience working directly with the private sector a plus. Ability to analyze and understand private sector business models.
  5. Experience designing and executing economic development projects, specifically in African geographies, with a range of public, private and non-profit partners.
  6. Demonstrated ability to manage strategy development execution, strong presentation design and business modeling skills, a plus.
  7. Previous work experience in a complex, fast-paced, and highly professional role, within a collaborative, dynamic organization and in an entrepreneurial environment where building policies, program and processes are necessary.
  8. Demonstrated interest in working to improve the lives of others.

Program Officer I- Data Manager at Population Council

In Kenya, the Council leads research and develops programs to reduce maternal mortality; build protective health, social, and economic assets for adolescent girls; reduce HIV transmission; respond to sexual and gender-based violence; address disrespect and abuse in maternity care; assess various service integration models; assess whether reproductive health voucher programs can help vulnerable populations access critical reproductive health services; and strengthen evidence for programs related to unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion. The Council helped the Kenyan government develop its first population policy in 1966, and played a key role in establishing the Population Studies and Research Institute at the University of Nairobi. The Council initiated a regional capacity-building program that led to the formation of the African Population and Health Research Center in 1995, now a leading independent research institution. The Council sustains the Africa Regional Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Network, a coalition that meets annually to review best practices for strengthening and integrating medical and legal services for survivors of sexual violence.

TITLE: Program Officer I- Data Manager

Position Summary:

The Population Council, Kenya (PC Kenya) seeks an experienced professional to serve as a Program Officer I – Data Manager who will be responsible for all aspects of data management. The job holder’s key responsibilities will include coordinating the processing of collected data; supporting project staff with data collection activities; overseeing proper management of data including secure back-up and archiving; supporting project staff with basic data analysis and reporting; representing the Council in technical working group meetings involving data management, processing and utilization; and providing data management support to other Council offices in sub-Saharan Africa if needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Coordinate all aspects of data management for ongoing and new research projects, including designing data entry screens; recruiting, training and supervising data entry personnel and activities; and overseeing data cleaning processes.
  2. Assist project staff with the design and implementation of research studies by reviewing study tools; programming the tools on mobile handheld devices such as tablets in android platforms; and training research assistants on utilization of new data collection and entry technologies.
  3. Work with project and field staff to ensure successful implementation of program monitoring and evaluation strategies and frameworks by conducting data validation and verification checks.
  4. Work with the Network Coordinator to develop, implement and support data archiving and protection mechanisms including secure data back-up and web-based data management system.
  5. Support project staff with basic data analysis and reporting including generating summary results of research data, transcribing open-ended data, and preparing summary reports of research activities.
  6. Work with the Network Coordinator to provide technical assistance to staff for basic information, communication and technology (ICT) support, software management and maintenance.
  7. Represent the Council in project dissemination meetings, training workshops, and technical working group meetings organized by national and international organizations including government and donor agencies.
  8. Provide data management support to other Council offices in sub-Saharan Africa region if needed including programming study tools on mobile handheld devices, training research assistants on the new technologies, and preparing the data for analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s degree in statistics, information technology, computer science, management information systems (MIS) or MIS-related field with at least 2-3 years of relevant experience; or a satisfactory combination of education and relevant experience.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with managing large datasets and relational databases such as Access and SQL, and programming using JAVA, Python, XML or SQL on Android or Windows platforms.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic data analysis using statistical software such as Excel, Stata or SPSS. GIS skills are an added advantage.
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to translate technical programming and data management information for non-technical audience.

Project Manager at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (OPC)

Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in east Africa, and home to three of the world’s last remaining northern white rhino. It is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, in a Sanctuary established to rehabilitate animals rescued from the black market. It has some of the highest predator densities in Kenya, and still manages a very successful livestock programme. Ol Pejeta also seeks to support the people living around its borders, to ensure wildlife conservation translates to better education, healthcare and infrastructure for the next generation of wildlife guardians.

The Project Manager will be responsible for the overall delivery and management of the project titled: ‘Strengthening Laikipia Conservancies and Collaboration in Northern Kenya‘, ensuring the project is implemented and managed in line with the rules and requirements of the donor and those of Ol Pejeta. A core part of this role will be to contribute towards strengthening the capacity of the Laikipia Conservancies Association (LCA).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project planning and budget forecasting;
  • Effective implementation and monitoring;
  • Budget and variance management in collaboration with the Grants Finance Accountant;
  • Monitoring and evaluation;
  • Sub-award management;
  • Effective and efficient liaison and collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders, in particular, the LCA and other project sub-awardees;

  • Support LCA sustainability by contributing towards (i) the identification of new funding opportunities and (ii) the development and management of new funding proposals

REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or similar qualification in Conservation, Natural Resource Management or related discipline
  • A Masters degree is an advantage
  • Project management certification or equivalent qualification such as Prince 2 is an advantage
  • Experience working on projects addressing conflict mitigation through natural resource management is an advantage
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with fluency in English, and verbal Swahili

EXPERIENCE

  • You must have demonstrable experience in project management of complex multi-year, multi-sectoral grants from government donors such as USAID, EU or other major institutional donors, ideally gained while working for an NGO in Kenya. Experience managing USG funded projects strongly preferred
  • Experience managing sub-award grant agreements
  • Proven experience in conservation, capacity building and/or natural resource management
