Corporate Communications Officer, Public Relations at Kenya Power

Kenya Power owns and operates most of the electricity transmission and distribution system in the country and sells electricity to over 4.8 million customers (as at June 29, 2016). The Company’s key mandate is to plan for sufficient electricity generation and transmission capacity to meet demand; building and maintaining the power distribution and transmission network and retailing of electricity to its customers. Reporting to the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, under Corporate Communications Department, the Corporate Communications Officer, Public Relations will be responsible for providing support to the Company and its engagement with various stakeholders such as employees, customers, shareholders, media, government bodies and multilateral and bilateral agencies. The job holder will also be responsible for handling all aspects of planned publicity campaigns and PR activities.

The key tasks & duties for this position are;

  • Participating in the development and implementation of Public Relations Strategy for the Company.
  • Preparing engagement meetings and planning communication programmes.
  • Facilitating the provision of information about the Company to various stakeholders; involving preparation of media reports, organizing News Conferences, Media Engagement; dealing with day to day inquiries from the media; developing and maintaining good links with the media.
  • Writing and producing high quality communication material and effectively communicating these across key audiences while ensuring that they conform to the Company’s and stakeholders’ standards.
  • Developing content (papers, briefs, power point presentations, etc.) in English and Kiswahili languages.
  • Monitoring and analyzing emerging trends to inform the Company’s engagement with external stakeholders primarily project partners.

Appointment Specification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Media or related field.
  • Diploma in Communication/Journalism/Public Relations will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ working experience in a busy news gathering and dissemination environment.
  • Membership of relevant Professional bodies is an added advantage.
  • Experience in a PR agency is an added advantage.
  • Good understanding of the media landscape and newsrooms operations.
  • Excellent Communication skills – both written and spoken.
  • Excellent command of both English and Kiswahili Languages – Writing and Speaking skills.
  • Knowledge on the workings of Government, bilateral and multilateral agencies and ability to interact effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Good media contacts of local and international media.

  • Advanced knowledge of various Microsoft office applications
  • Effective team player
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and withstand pressure
