Legal Officer at Marie Stopes

Marie Stopes International is an international non-governmental organisation providing contraception and safe abortion services in 37 countries around the world. Marie Stopes International as an organisation lobbies in favour of access to abortion, and provides a variety of sexual and reproductive healthcare services including advice, vasectomies, and abortions in the UK and other countries where it is legal to do so. In 2015 there were an estimated 21 million women around the world using a method of contraception provided by Marie Stopes International provided. The contraception and safe abortion services that the organisation provided in 2015 averted 6.3 million unintended pregnancies, 4 million unsafe abortions and 18,100 maternal deaths. The organisation’s core services include family planning; safe abortion and post-abortion care; maternal and child health care, including safe delivery and obstetrics; diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections; and HIV/AIDS prevention.

This post reports to the Director – People and Development. The Legal Officer’s role will be to ensure that Marie Stopes Kenya conducts its activities and manages its relationships with the wider Marie Stopes International, donors and its partners in compliance with the law

This position is responsible for providing high quality legal advice to teams within Marie Stopes Kenya on a full range of legal and challenging operational issues, in accordance with the following principles: instill and foster a culture of legal compliance, advocate for Ethics & Compliance across all levels within the organization and build relationships with an external panel of legal advisors.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a reputable university with a Diploma in Legal Studies (Kenya School of Law)
  • Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate.
  • At least two years’ post-qualification experience in the provision of legal services in a reputable law firm or the legal department of an international or leading organization.

Skills and Experience:

  1. Knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations within the operating environment of MSK
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication both internally and externally
  3. Knowledge of share point and/or strong willingness to adopt new technology critical
  4. Confident in providing information as requested and taking initiative as required
  5. Strong negotiation skills
  6. Proven discretion
  7. Pro-choice
