INTERN – Green Buildings, Participatory Housing Design at United Nations Human Settlements Programme

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

It works with organisations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector, to help build, manage, plan and finance sustainable urban development.

UN-Habitat supports New Urban Agenda partners and governments at all levels in formulating and implementing progressive housing sector reforms, policies, programmes and legislation which contribute to the creation of inclusive and sustainable cities, and comply with international law relating to the right to adequate housing. It provides expertise to support sound analysis of the housing sector and, in particular, the review of key legislation and elements affecting affordable housing provisions. UN-Habitat assists governments to formulate and implement policies and strategies designed to maximize the impact of housing in national socio-economic development and employment generation, as well as in urban development. It helps with in-depth local diagnosis of the state of the housing sector and provides technical support to the formulation of national housing policies and subsequent implementation strategies. UN-Habitat also provides tailor-made capacity development for all housing sector stakeholders.

The UN-HABITAT Green Buildings, Participatory Housing Design internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Leader of the Housing Unit, the intern will perform the following tasks:
– Support in the drafting and design of project proposals linked to the theme of green buildings for sustainable housing: both design and research. Projects are expected to showcase the importance of sustainability in the field of housing, focusing on the most vulnerable groups and on housing affordability;
– Promote and support the management of the Global Network for Sustainable Housing and the One Planet Network, liasing with partners and organizing virtual and in-person meetings;
– Support with the coordination of activities from the Global Network for Sustainable Housing, including reporting activity, media outreach, coordination of fundraising activities and dissemination of network internal and external information relevant to partners;
– Support in organizing side-events, participatory housing design workshops, special sessions, and-or round tables on this thematic area at relevant conferences held by partner organisations and by UN-Habitat;
– Provide support by participating in meetings as it is deemed necessary and opportune, to formulate and monitor the strategic direction of the network and guide programme implementation;
– Support in knowledge-sharing by way of the network’s online platform. This includes external knowledge-sharing by uploading publications to the library, sharing details on past and on-going projects as well as news, events, or calls for proposals. Internal knowledge sharing with Network partners of relevant articles, planned projects or possible sources of funding.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study: Design, Innovation, Creative, Entrepreneurial, Engineering, Architectonic or Graphic design skills will be an added advantage.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required.
