The Kenya Education Network (KENET)is a not-for-profit membership organization that is also the National Research and Education Network (NREN) of Kenya. It builds and operates a national broadband network that interconnects member institutions and provides access to the global Internet. KENET’s mission is to catalyse the transformation of education and research in Kenya using ICT.
KENET provides broadband Internet services, ICT capacity building, and community cloud services such as web hosting, Infrastructure as a Service and Video/Web Conferencing as a Service and advanced research services to member institutions that includes all the major universities and research institutions.
KENET promotes and supports research and education collaboration in all academic areas and conducts ICT in education research in partnership with faculty and researchers drawn from member institutions.

Research Associate – Research Coordination and Advocacy

This part-time research position reports to the Executive Director. The key responsibility of the successful candidate shall be to coordinate and facilitate academic activities of KENET Special Interest Groups in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) areas and to prepare and disseminate data-driven research advocacy reports for different stakeholders (e.g., government, Vice Chancellors, and donors) using advanced research analytics tools and open data available in Kenya. He/she shall also be part of the team prepare research grant proposals at KENET.
Suitable candidates shall be expected to have the following minimum qualifications and experience:
- A Master’s degree in statistics, engineering, physics, computer science or information systems. A PhD degree shall be an added advantage
- Full-time faculty member at a Kenyan university with at least three years’ experience at the rank of Lecturer
- Recent recipient (individually or as part of a research team) of a research grant from an external donor (i.e., outside the university)
- At least two refereed journal or conference publications in the last two years
- Demonstrated excellent writing and oral communication skills in English
- Demonstrated high ethical and moral standards
- Available for at least two days per week for at least two calendar years (2016 and 2017)
Faculty members who plan to be on sabbatical leave in the year 2016 are especially encouraged to apply. All applications shall require the approval of the heads of respective department.

Systems Administrator – (Shared Services & ERP Deployment)

This position reports to the Lead Network Operations Engineer and will join the core shared service technical team with the responsibility for deployment and support of shared and security services that KENET provides to member institutions. The candidate must be capable of working to accomplish both short term and long-term goals.
Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
- An undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, computer science or information systems equivalent from a recognized university with proficiency in UNIX and at least one programming language.
- At least five years’ experience as a systems administrator in an organization with a large IP network and/or a large data center.
- At least five years experience in deployment and support of large information systems (ERPs); Management Information Systems and the technical implementation of information security policies in a medium to large organization
- Working knowledge in deployment and support of enterprise shared storage systems, enterprise virtualization technologies, open source virtualization and cloud platform technologies, containerized virtualization technologies and the technical implementation of information security policies in a medium to large organization
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server & LINUX operating systems; MS SQL Server and related Dababase management systems will be an added advantage
- Post-graduate degree with specialization in information systems or security will be an added advantage
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language
- Ability to work with limited supervision and in a team of ICT professionals
- Demonstrated high ethical and moral standards

KENET invites suitable recent university graduates to apply for a one-year Graduate Trainee program (Graduate Trainee in Network Engineering and Operations) at KENET that aims to develop capacity in; Network Engineering, Information and Shared Services, and Communications areas.
Qualifications
- Applicants must be degree holders from recognised universities in electrical engineering or equivalent (e.g., electronic engineering, telecommunications engineering). The applicants must be registered or be eligible for registration as graduate engineers with the Engineers Board of Kenya.
