- Receive patients into the intensive care or trauma unit and quickly go through patients’ notes to determine medical issues.
- Assess patients to determine the intensity of disease or trauma and create nursing care plans to meet his or her specific requirements.
- Record patients’ vitals including blood pressure, temperature, and pulse on a periodic basis.
- Observe patients to determine signs of discomfort or changes in conditions and ensure that any significant observations are communicated to the doctor.
- Respond to life-saving situations by performing first aid and CPR, following standard nursing protocols for treatment.
- Set up, regulate and maintain life-saving or life-maintenance equipment such as ventilators, and record patients’ responses in an accurate manner.
- Consult and coordinate with healthcare teams to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care plans for patients in critical conditions.
- Arrange for the administration of complete bedside care such as support with urination and stool and ensure patient well-being consistently.
- Initiate patient education plans to teach both patients and their families how to manage their illnesses and injuries.
- Monitor catheters, leads, and tubing to ensure proper placement and functioning.
- Provide information regarding post-treatment home care needs, including diet and nutrition and exercise programs.
- Record all nursing care information in a precise and accurate manner and by following appropriate formats and forms.
- Provide assistant to physicians by helping them assess patients and deliver medication. This may include dressing wounds and monitoring life support equipment that patients use.
- Provide emotional support to patients’ families and educate them on procedures of an ICU.
- Educate patients and families about renal diseases and their management procedures.
- Provide patients with information on how to prepare for renal exams and procedures.
- Provide support in priming dialyzers and bloodlines and readying dialysis equipment.
- Ensure that dialysis equipment is in good working condition before a scheduled procedure.
- Assist patients in getting ready for a hemodialysis procedure.
- Accompany patients to procedure rooms and ensure their comfort before and during the procedure.
- Assist in hooking patients up to dialysis machines and observe them for discomfort or pain.
- Evaluate patients’ reaction to dialysis procedures and make sure that each observation is documented properly.
- Ensure that patients’ vitals during dialysis procedures are observed constantly.
- Explain post-treatment and home care activities that patients need to manage.
- Respond to emergency situations during dialysis procedures.
- Make sure that patients are carefully and safely transported back to their rooms once a dialysis procedure has ended.
- She also must ensure that accompanying documents such as patients’ records and histories are complete.
Qualifications
- Higher Diploma in Critical Care from a recognized institution.
- Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN).
- At least 2 years working experience.
- Team player.
- Attention to detail.
