Finance Assistant at Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International is looking to add a Finance Assistant who is well-versed in accounting principles and has great attention to detail to our team in Nairobi Kenya. The Finance Assistant will be part of a team of professionals working to maintain order and transparency for the organization’s finances.
The Finance Assistant will provide support to the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter (TCIS), manage daily accounting tasks and provide TCIS grant support to our regional finance department. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in accounting principles and able to work comfortably with numbers and attention to detail.


Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare financial transactions related to office and project expenditures – ensure proper coding and approvals with special focus on transactions related to TCIS
  • Support budget management of TCIS grants
  • Support GCDR in reporting for TCIS grants
  • Verify supporting documentation, ensure reconciliation with approved contracts
  • Maintain an effective filing system for financial transactions
  • Review and process travel & expense reports, follow up on employee advances
  • Assist the Senior accountant with monthly closings and preparation of monthly financial statements Assist with preparation and coordination of the audit process
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor


Key Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in finance, Accounting or related field

  • At least 2-3 years of work experience in finance or accounting
  • Good understanding of financial and accounting policies, standards and associated regulatory issues
  • Work experience with INGOs would be an advantage
  • Good communication skills (both written and oral) in English
  • Technical accounting skills and understanding of accounting software
  • Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Good analytical and organizational skills, attention to detail and determination to meet deadlines
  • Honesty and strong ethics are required to be successful in this position
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated capacity and willingness to learn – open to learning new ways of doing things
  • Professional attitude towards work
  • Pro-active and results oriented
  • Friendly, customer service orientation
