The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Science Division is responsible for analyzing the state of the global environment, providing early warning information and assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyze and promote international cooperation and action on the environment.
The internship is located in the UNEP’s Science Division, Financial Management Unit at the Nairobi duty station. This advertisement is seeking two interns to work in the Financial Management Unit in the Science Division of UNEP.
The duration of an Internship is three months minimum; maximum is six months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Finance and Budget Officer, the selected intern is expected to:-
- Assist in the preparation of excel tables reflecting status of Funds for different projects in direct coordination with the Funds Management Officer.
- Compiles a variety of standard statistical and other reports, work orders, etc using various databases.
- Follow up on actions related to the Financial Management Unit activities, e.g payments, receipt of funds, ineed tickets to UNON, etc.
- Assist in the Front Office, checking submitted routing slips for certification for correctness and communicate discrepancies to supervisors.
- Assist in the issuance of office stationery items and monitoring stock levels for replenishment schedule.
- Filing of documents related to all projects and make sure that these files are up-to date.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
- Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
- Fields of study: Finance, Accounting, Business Administration.
Work Experience
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
- Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
