Public Information Officer at United Nations Environment Programme

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment’s Communication Division communicates UN Environment’s core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UN Environment worldwide. This position is located in the Communication Division at the Nairobi duty station. Under the general guidance of the Director, who serves as Publisher for the organization, and under the supervision of the Chief of Section, Content and Client Services Public Information Officer (Managing Editor) is responsible for the effective and efficient performance of the following duties:

Responsibilities

1. Editorial strategy and policy guidelines: Implements a cutting edge editorial strategy for the organization; Contributes to the formulation and implementation of corporate editorial polices, objectives and guidelines; Contributes to capacity building within United Nations Environment (UN Environment) by providing advice on improving quality and style of major written outputs and communication materials to ensure effective internal and external communication; Coordinates the editorial work by creating and maintaining a detailed schedule of main flagship publications and documents; Liaise as needed with counterparts within UNON Conference Services as well as UNON Print Shop; Develops and manages editorial workflow to effectively and efficiently manage the content and deadlines.
2. Stakeholder engagement: Coordinates, promotes and monitors all aspects related to key flagship publications by working closely with internal and external stakeholders, monitoring trends and reporting on issues; Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external authors and sources by organizing and facilitating regular meetings and providing feedback in a timely manner; Plans and oversees the editorial work by developing terms of reference for establishment of editorial rosters, translator rosters and long term agreements (LTA).
3. Quality Control: Coordinates editing activities including editing texts of a specialized or technical nature pertaining to United Nations Environment (UN Environment) ‘s work in order to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with standards, policy and practice; Ensures style, consistency and quality of all publications and written content published on behalf of United Nations Environment (UN Environment) ; Ensures clarity, accuracy and cohesion by consulting with author departments within United Nations Environment (UN Environment) researching to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors; Carries out regular quality control by checking updated language version against the language of the original draft. Redrafts and revises incorrect or unclear passages; Corrects factual, logical, spelling and grammatical errors, aligning the structure and style of documents; Provides specialized advice to authors by liaising and consulting regularly to eliminate errors and avoid inadvertent ambiguities; Advises authors by providing relevant information on specific aspects of editorial policy and
practice and assists them in the preparation of manuscripts.
4. Perform any other relevant duties as assigned.

• Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view; Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

• Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; Tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in communication, media relations, formulation and dissemination of public information, journalism, international relations, or directly related field is required. Prior experience within the context of environment is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working knowledge of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

• This position is temporarily available for a duration of four months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
