The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). The posts are located in the Office of Director-General, United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Security and Safety Service.Under the overall command of the Chief of Security, the security officer is required to perform armed security functions and reports directly to the Security Sergeant or Supervising Officer. Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsibilities
1. Provide security coverage of entry points throughout the United Nations compound to prevent entry to unauthorized person and the unauthorized removal of UN property.
2. Screen all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the premises including clearance through metal detectors; check packages both visually and by use of x-ray equipment; identify and retain custody of weapons entering the premises with the authority to either confiscate or return said weapons upon owners’ exit from the premises.
3. Conduct exterior and watch-tour patrols throughout the compound and for the purpose of intercepting unauthorized persons attempting to have gained entry to the premises, reporting all security, fire and safety violations to the Security Control Center.
4. Provide information and directions to all persons associated with the organization.
5. Control, identify and clear pedestrian and vehicular traffic entering and exiting the premises; maintains log books and records as required.
6. Maintain alertness for any potential or actual breaches of security and any disturbances or unusual activity; and reports these immediately.
7. Ensure that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation.
8. Perform other related duties as assigned

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional training in Police or Military is required with sound and thorough knowledge of security related matters. Candidates must pass the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT) in order to be considered. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to operate a motor vehicle and be in the possession of a valid drivers license. Candidates must demonstrate the basic ability to handle a firearm.
Work Experience
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in security operations, including in civilian Police Force, Military Police or other relevant military operation is required. An age limit of 35 years or below is applicable for this post.
Languages
English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second Official UN language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Appointment against this post is on a local basis. Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year and renewal is therefore subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.
