The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
This internship opportunity to participate in UN-Habitat’s work in delivering universal access to basic services and to implement the relevant Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 6, SDG 3 and SDG 11 generally, as well as the New Urban Agenda, as well as measuring the impact of interventions that can reduce deaths to vulnerable populations including children.
There is a need for innovative projects to foster infrastructure development that can accelerate progress to achieving universal access, coverage and acceptable quality of basic services, including investigating health and socioeconomic outcomes and progress relating to the provision of urban basic services – primarily lack of access to drinking water and sanitation services, sustainable transport, solid waste management, sustainable energy and information and communications technologies. The reduction of water-borne diseases, and improved healthcare.
The incumbent should have an appreciation and insight into health and nexus with urban basic services and urban infrastructure gaps in the context of assisting developing and least developed countries to close the infrastructure gap. The incumbent should have the ability to conducting literature review of emerging practices and methodologies, ability to conduct data analysis and synthesize research, in order to support in developing measurement and/or analytical tools that can track progress to the achievement of territories and cities in key areas of basic services, in relation to the sustainable development goals and New Urban Agenda.
UN-Habitat works towards solving sustainable urban development challenges for the developing world, with an emphasis on the needs of the vulnerable and marginalized.
The UN-Habitat Urban Basic Services internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the Supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will:
- Write and report; literature review, draft articles, and materials, review technical work and analysis on equitable, inclusive, accessible and sustainable urban infrastructure and basic services, and measuring outcomes of access.
- Assist in quantitative and qualitative research, data collection, and statistical, spatial and geographic information systems analysis; evaluate health and social indicators and changes in demographic profile including structure of health, education, mortality resulting from interventions of access to basic services.
- Identify, conceptualize and plan innovative field and research projects with private and public institutions, including civil society and academic, as relevant to basic services.
- Assist in the implementation of UN-Habitat supported initiatives and field projects, or any other tasks as required from time to time.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

- Geography, Epidemiology, Healthcare, Urban Management, Population, Demography, Sociology, Urban Management Planning.
Work Experience
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
