The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
This internship opportunity to participate in UN-Habitat’s work in delivering universal access to basic services and to implement the relevant Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 6, SDG 3 and SDG 11 generally, as well as the New Urban Agenda. There is a need for innovative technologies and expanded deployments of frontier technologies, including machine-to-machine wireless networking applications, devices and solutions to accelerate progress to achieving universal access, coverage and acceptable quality of basic services – including addressing lack of access to drinking water and sanitation services, sustainable transport, solid waste management, sustainable energy and information and communications technologies.
UN-Habitat works towards solving sustainable urban development challenges for the developing world, with an emphasis on the needs of the vulnerable and marginalized.
The UN-Habitat Wireless Networks and Internet-of-Things (Utilities and Urban Basic Services) internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period
Under the Supervision of Programme Officer, the intern will:
- Assist on hands on development of devices using knowledge of cellular GPRS/3G/4G/LTE/LPWAN/NB-IoT technologies and other IoT protocols with a focus on end-to-end system architecture.
- Understand CPU, GPU and computer micro-architectures.
- Assist to program in C/C++, Python, Java or other programming language.
- Assist to conduct research under guidance
- Have background in systems research demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred Areas of Studies
- Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or similar discipline.
Work Experience
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
