Senior Legal Assistant at Kenya Marine And Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI)

KMFRI was established to conduct research on aquatic systems covering both marine and freshwater. The Institute has grown from staff strength of two Research Scientists at inception to the current 122 scientists. KMFRI’s approved staff establishment stands at 1,350 employees. KMFRI infrastructure capacity has also expanded from two research stations based in Mombasa and Kisumu with acquisition of seven additional stations. KMFRI is managed by a Board of Management appointed by the Cabinet Secretary, for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The Board has a gazetted Chairman and the Institute Director is the Secretary. Administratively, the Director is the Chief Executive Officer, assisted by three Deputy Directors, one in charge of Ocean and Coastal Systems Directorate, the other responsible for Freshwater Systems Directorate and the third in-charge of Finance and Administration Directorate.

KMF/10. SENIOR LEGAL ASSISTANT (KMFRI GRADE 8)- POSITION – ONE (1) 

Basic Salary Scale: KShs. 53,413 – KShs. 69,436 P.M.
House Allowance: KShs. 28,000 P.M.
Commuter Allowance: KShs 6,000 P.M.
Annual Leave Allowance: KShs 6,000 P.A.
Medical Cover & Other Allowances: As provided by KMFRI
Terms of Service: Permanent & Pensionable

The duties and responsibilities of the officer entail: –

  1. Opening legal files;
  2. Reviewing and retrieving files for relevant action;
  3. Preparing legal briefs for the initiation of legal action
  4. Filing contracts and court documents;
  5. Assisting in Preparing and filing of pleadings for and on behalf of the Institute;
  6. Responding to inquiries regarding specific cases;
  7. Serving legal documents to clients and other stakeholders;
  8. Maintaining and updating files systematically and accurately to ensure ease access and retrieval;
  9. Monitoring progress of contract and court cases;
  10. Maintaining and updating master diary for court cases;
  11. Verifying documents submitted to the legal department to confirm accuracy and validity;
  12. Drafting reports and submit the same to the Legal Officers for further action;
  13. Ensuring that pending matters are brought up for necessary attention; and
  14. Ensuring proper service of legal documents to clients and other third parties.

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have: –

  1. At least three (3) years relevant work experience;
  2. Diploma in Law from a recognized institution;
  3. Minimum KCSE C- (minus) or its equivalent;
  4. A current Process Servers Certificate or its equivalent;
  5. Demonstrable good results in work performance;
  6. Proficiency in compute applications; and
  7. Meets the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
