INTERN – Public Information at United Nations Environment Programme

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Biodiversity Communications internship is for six (6) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Chief of Public Advocacy and Communications and Coordinator of Young Champions of the Earth the intern will:

•Support all aspects of Young Champions of the Earth communication, including conducting desk research, developing and executing communication strategies, supporting writing and production of media content, engaging influencer’s and partners and coordination with relevant substantive divisions within UNEP;
•Contributes to research and writing for campaign related social media, media, exhibition and storytelling activities;
•Contribute to coordination and implementation of activities related to the organization of special events and conferences;
•Conducts research and provided analysis on effectiveness of communication activities;
•Prepares reports that include detailed statistics and analytics on campaign activity including audiences, reach and engagement;
•Perform other duties as prescribed by the unit chief, the section chief, office of the Director.

Client orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view. Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect. Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Studies in marketing, communication and environmental studies preferred.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Are you a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. programme or equivalent, or have you completed a degree and are able to commence an internship within a year of graduation?

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
