INTERN – Gender and Human Rights at United Nations Human Settlements Programme

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. The New Urban Agenda, agreed upon in October 2016, highlights the importance of addressing urbanization in a holistic manner, putting people and the environment at the centre of policy-making and programming. The New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda are premised on the understanding that urbanization must be harnessed to benefit all, and that no person/s should be left behind in the development process.

The UN System-wide Action Plan on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-SWAP) has made it obligatory for all UN agencies, funds and programmes to track resources invested in promoting gender equality.

The UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2014-2019 highlights four cross-cutting issues: climate change, human rights, gender equality and youth. All four cross-cutting issues are to be “mainstreamed throughout the seven focus areas, ensuring that all policies, knowledge management tools and operational activities address these issues in their design and im-plementation” (para. 45).

Objective of the Internship:
1. Assist with the core roles and responsibilities of the Unit, including: Advocacy, Capacity Building, Project development, Research
2. Assist with project review for cross-cutting issues (gender, youth, human rights, climate change)
3. Support the development of the cross-cutting report and other reporting measures

The UN-Habitat Gender and Human Rights internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. The intern will support the activities related to gender and human rights mainstreaming throughout all normative and substantive work of UN-Habitat and give operational support to the Unit.

Under the Supervision of Gender Equality Unit Leader, the intern will:
– Drafting documents, reports and correspondence for internal use.
– Desk research on thematic issues thematic and country specific gender and human rights issues in the context of urbanization including but not limited to disability rights, gender equality and digital
rights.
– Support to and participation in internal and external meetings. This will involve both organizational and substantive tasks, such as preparation of contributions, development of agendas, logistical support and reporting.
– Support and organize events and consultations and prepare relevant background papers.

Client orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view. Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect. Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred Area(s) of Studies:
Gender studies, Human Rights, sociology, anthropology, political science, development studies, development management or a related field.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
