INTERN -Project Coordination and Support at United Nations Human Settlements Programme

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The Land and GLTN Unit, through the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), located within the Urban Legislation, Land and Governance Branch of UN-Habitat has the objectives to develop, test and disseminate pro-poor and gender responsive approaches in regard to urban land, innovative residential tenures, affordable land management/administration systems, and land related regulatory/legal frameworks and tools.

The UN-Habitat Project Coordination and Support internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Human Settlements Officer, the intern will:
– Provide technical support in documenting lessons and experiences of the Unit’s land tenure interventions on country level work, tools development and partnership building.
– Provide research and technical support to resource mobilization activities including development of concept notes and proposals.
– Provide technical and coordination support in the development of land tools in collaboration with partners.
– Assist substantive and technical staff in organizing and documenting land-related events, training and meetings.
– Provide coordination support with partners in relation to project monitoring, capacity development and partnership strengthening processes.
– Provide support in the over-all research and documentation of GLTN-related work on land tenure and land administration.
– Contribute in the review of management and financial processes and workflows for efficiency and better coordination.
– Contribute in various GLTN-related communication and advocacy activities and initiatives.
– Perform other relates tasks as assigned.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Preferred Area of Studies:
Studies in Land management, international development, political science, social development

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
