The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
UN-Habitat helps the urban poor by transforming cities into safer and healthier places with better opportunities. It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector.
The UN-HABITAT International Relations (Programme Support) internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the External Relations Officer – and under the overall supervision of the Secretary to the Governing Bodies, the intern will:
– Support the operations of the Secretariat of the Governing Bodies (the “Secretariat”) in the drafting, preparation and dissemination of documents for the Executive Board (EB), Committee of Permanent Representatives to UN-Habitat and the UN-Habitat Assembly.
– Assist in preparations, implementation and follow-up activities to the meetings of the Governing Bodies and its respective Bureaux with special emphasis on documentation.
– Assist in liaising with substantive officers in preparation for the meetings of the Governing Bodies.
– Assist with delivering documents, texts of speeches and background material to meetings rooms and respective officials.
– Assist in managing and updating the UN-Habitat Secretariat of Governing Bodies related websites particularly the web page dedicated to the Executive board, including providing recommendations for design and update of the website.
– Assist in keeping an updated data-base of (i) All permanent missions (ii) Governing Bodies membership (iii) any ad-hoc working group established by the Executive Board (iv) Regional groups of States; and other relevant contacts
– Assist with maintaining up-to-date information on the website.
– Assist with protocol duties during official functions involving Government dignitaries and senior UN officials.
– Assist with official correspondence with Governments, Heads of States, and observe proper diplomatic language and format.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study: International Relations, Diplomatic Studies and Public Administration.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required.
