Terre des hommes (Tdh) launched its activities in Kenya in January 2011. Tdh provides support to children in Dadaab refugee camp and in Korogocho slums.
Tdh also implements health and nutrition projects in Garissa County and has willingness to develop WASH Projects in Garissa.
In line with this Tdh seeks the following vacant positions: Hygiene Promoter
8 – Subject to the availability of funding
Reporting to:
- (Hierarchically): Program Manager
- (Functionally): Program Coordinator
Contract duration: Initially 3 months – can be extended, subject to the availability of funding
General description of the position: Under the supervision of the Program Manager and with the technical support of the Program Coordinator, the Hygiene Promoter will implement the work projects, respecting deadlines and technical requirements.
More specifically, the Hygiene Promoter will work closely with the targeted communities to reduce the risk of water and sanitation related communicable diseases by promoting good hygiene practice with consideration of gender and cultural context and in view of positive behavior change.
Responsibilities for the Hygiene Promoter Job
- Ensure good hygiene practices and behaviour change
- Participate in project related assessments (e.g. KAP surveys) on WASH and hygiene among communities to measure impact.
- Define key hygiene messages appropriate to pass to the communities based on issues affecting them especially on use of safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, hygiene kits and on prevention of waterborne diseases.
- Demonstrate the use of WASH specific items which need special knowledge for operation and maintenance, especially when using chemical i.e. water purification tablets, water treatment equipment.
- Conduct participatory and behavior change approach in promoting good water, sanitation and hygiene practices in targeted area (hygiene promotion sessions).
- Conduct participatory monitoring of water and sanitation facilities usage and maintenance with community.
- Manage and conduct home visiting to assess, inform and motivate families to improve hygiene and living conditions when required.
- Provide support to the distribution of hygiene items, and conduct monitoring and follow up to ensure proper usage of items and appropriateness.
- Maintain full qualitative and quantitative records and reports of activities, disaggregated by age, gender and diversity where appropriate.

- Commit to respect Tdh Risk Management Policies including: Child Safeguarding Policy, Safety and Security Policy and Anti-Fraud/Corruption Policy, Whistle Blowing Policy
- Commit to ensure the best implementation possible of the Tdh Risk Management Policies
- Commit to inform supervisors and to deal with any cases, allegations, or possibility of transgression, even potential, of the Tdh Risk Management Policies.
Hygiene Promoter Job Qualifications
- Diploma in a field related to water and sanitation or public health/health education.
- At least 2 years practical work experience working with vulnerable communities in the field of water/sanitation, WASH, hygiene or public health or community development.
- Familiarity with key health and hygiene issues and hygiene promotion/education activities in remote areas.
- Proven experience in community mobilisation, behavior change, training and /or teaching.
- Experience of working with UN or (International/National) Non-Governmental Organisations desirable.
- Deep understanding of age, gender and diversity issues with regard to WASH.
- Knowledge of minimum WASH standards (e.g. Sphere).

- Cultural sensitivity (e.g. to age, gender and diversity) and experience working in complex / hostile environments
- Ability to prioritise large and changeable workloads
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team, including team management
- Able to work independently and energetically
Languages: Fluency in English, Swahili and Somali is compulsory
