You are a passionate mixed methods researcher who loves digging in to understand people, products, and services. You’re naturally curious, and nothing excites you quite like a really complicated idea. You love to share what you’re learning and go to great efforts to help others understand it. You are equally comfortable doing interviews, ethnographic field studies, usability observations, and participatory design workshops. You love working with reams of data and translating it into clear, actionable insights that help design teams develop great solutions and measure their effectiveness.
ABOUT THE DESIGN TEAM
ALU has embraced a human-centred design ethos since its inception, with a primary focus on experience design across our in-person and digital experiences. As we begin a new growth phase, we are ready to build out our design function to focus on user experience, digital products, and visual identity.
Our Design Team will include UX designers and researchers, UI designers, and visual designers; in the future, the team will expand to include product and service designers as well. The team has a critical role within ALU: defining and refining end-to-end ALU experience for students, faculty, and staff. To that end, the Design Team creates the frameworks, processes, and systems that support concept development, prototyping, execution, and evaluation related to the ALU experience. As part of this, the Design Team also supports other teams in applying strong human-centred design approaches in order to keep the overall experience aligned.
ABOUT THE ROLE

From using field studies to uncover initial user needs to running usability tests with lo-fi prototypes to pulling together product metrics to generate insights, UX Researchers ensure that the voice of the user is always front and centre.
- Developing & executing research plans that combine a variety of research practices to bring out the authentic voice of the user.
- Creating personas & scenarios in collaboration with the design team that incorporate research insights.
- Writing research reports that synthesize findings to build buy-in from different stakeholders.
- Working with product teams to define and measure metrics that align organizational strategy with user needs.
- Running usability tests and field tests of products and services and synthesizing insights from those tests.
- Producing research practices that continually bring the user into the design process.
