The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), like most other universities, started in a modest way. It commenced as a graduate school of theology known as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA). The Institute (CHIEA) was founded in 1984 by the regional ecclesiastical authority known as the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences
Organizational Relationship: Reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs and Research
Duties and Responsibilities
- To promote and coordinate relevant scientific research in the Faculties, Departments and Centres of CUEA;
- To encourage interdisciplinary research between the Faculties, Centres and the departments of CUEA and relevant Catholic Institutions throughout AMECEA;
- To liaise with staff engaged in research, to monitor the research that is current, and to assist where necessary when obstacles are encountered;
- To organize and coordinate, with the facilitators, staff seminars, dissemination workshops, etc. and to prepare final research reports for publication;
- To chair the CUEA Research Committee and to prepare, for assessment, the research proposals submitted for funding;
- To prepare the Eastern Africa Journal for Humanities and Sciences;
- To prepare the departmental annual report;
- To check that the departmental resources are used for the purposes for which they were allocated, and to prepare the provisional budget for submission to the Financial Administrator;
- To actively engage in research projects;
- To participate through ex-officio membership in committees, and membership in adhoc committees;
- Perform any other duty as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Competences:
- Should be a PhD holder in a relevant field;
- Evidence of administration experience;
- At the level of Associate Professor/Professor;
- Evidence of ongoing research activity and dissemination of research findings, including a reasonable record of publications in accredited and/or internationally-recognized journals;
- A substantial record of high quality scholarship and research relative to others in the same field, evidenced by a record of high quality publications in appropriate academic journals;
- Capacity to initiate, manage and supervise research, including research at doctoral level, to attract research students and/or research projects and funding, and to develop research capacity;
- Professional and academic standing in the field of specialization;
- Where appropriate, advanced research skills or capacity in the relevant discipline or field and participation in development programmes. Must have demonstrated strong research and academic leadership for example by serving on university committees, professional and academic associations, acting as head of division or discipline, with competencies to serve as head of research division;
- Service to the University either at departmental or institutional level and ability to take on administrative responsibilities at departmental level;
- Academic and/or professional participation at national and/or international level;
- Evidence of Community Service activities.

- Must exhibit team development and leadership qualities;
- Should demonstrate outstanding administrative, organizing, staff mobilization and managerial skills;
- Must possess good interpersonal, communication and customer care skills;
- Must be a person of integrity; morally upright and mature;
- He/she should be flexible and adaptable enough to work in a multicultural environment.
