Deputy Team Lead (DTL) at Mercy Corps

Mercy Corps is a global humanitarian aid agency engaged in transitional environments that have experienced some sort of shock: natural disaster, economic collapse, or conflict.Program / Department Summary: Mercy Corps is implementing a multi-year, conflict prevention and stability programme funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office through the Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF). Collective Resilience Against Violent Extremism (CReAtE) programme will engage local and national government, local civil society organizations and communities to mitigate conflict and instability in East Africa through support to policy initiatives, community engagement, and support to national civil society organizations.

The programme will work in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mozambique and Uganda, through strategies adapted to the context and opportunities in each country to advance research, legislation and field implementation of programme activities.

General Position Summary: 

The Deputy Team Lead(DTL) is a senior member of the CREATE team, working with the Team Leader to design and implement strategic interventions that are contextually specific, demonstrate learning and adaptation and achieve sustainable impact.

S/he will be overseeing the efficient delivery of day-to-day activities, particularly in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda ensuring the development of systems and plans for the management and monitoring of programme performance, and to ensure community-level interventions, government policies, and research are delivered in a complementary and mutually-reinforcing way to achieve maximum impact.

The DTL will work closely with the Senior Programme Manager in Kenya to identify and engage with local partners to build their capacity to deliver community-based interventions to strengthen individual and community resilience to violent extremism, and with the MEL Manager to ensure monitoring and evaluation systems are developed that track and assess programmatic impact and support adaptation and learning.

S/he will work with the Team Leader in programme oversight, technical and operational management aspects of the program and ensure that all appropriate reporting requirements are met.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Peace Building and Conflict Resolution or related discipline.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working on countering violent extremism programming, conflict mitigation and resolution, and/or violence reduction and prevention programs.
  • Solutions-oriented individual, with strong strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness managing a diverse team of staff, consortium partners and local implementing partners, building a cohesive and results-oriented team to deliver on complex programming result.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of community members to discuss sensitive and delicate topics in a conflict-sensitive manner.
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and inter-personal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, skill, and experience working within different cultural settings and navigating public affairs and communications on sensitive issues.
