It provides high-risk small growing businesses with low-cost financing and advisory support services to pilot, refine and scale their operations and ideas. It has headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and offices in East Africa and West Africa. The client’s strategy is focused on agribusiness/ agriculture and renewable energy sectors with increased support to climate technologies; and a deepened focus on gender, youth and employment. The client has invested in more than 200 businesses across sub-Saharan Africa, impacted more than 15 million lives and created over 10,000 jobs. It has also leveraged more than US$500 million in matching funds from the private sector.
To propel the organisation’s next stage of growth, our client is seeking to recruit a strategic, visionary and experienced individual to fill the post of Chief Executive Officer.
Overall Objective
Reporting to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is a member of the Executive Committee and the Management Committee with primary responsibility for all organisation operations. The CEO will provide proactive high-level expertise and leadership for both short-term and long-term planning and management for the organisation’s financial and operating requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to the organisation’s staff to design, implement and evaluate strategic action plans and budgets in line with the approved organisation strategy aimed at meeting the fundraising and impact targets;
- Direct and exercise overall control of the organisation’s operations to ensure that its activities are managed in a professional and efficient manner in order to meet its mission and strategic objectives;
- Develop strategies for identifying and pursuing opportunities for acquiring additional programme funding that are in harmony with the organisation’s strategy and mission;
- Provide oversight over the organisation’s finance operations, standards, policies, procedures and systems across all the departments for monitoring and reporting financial performance to ensure proper management and accountability of funds in line with financial and budgetary policies and procedures of government and donor agencies;
- Oversee the organisation’s establishment and implementation of relevant policies and procedure manuals to respond to donor and other needs;
- Oversee the implementation of resource allocation, efficient programme implementation, and competent programme monitoring and reporting;
- Ensure the development and implementation of effective human capital and organizational development policies and systems for resourcing, performance management, learning and development, employee relations, total reward, employee engagement programmes to attract, develop, motivate and retain high calibre staff;
- Develop succession plans for the Organisation that will be approved by the Board of Directors;
- Provide oversight in the development and implementation of an effective supply chain policy to ensure goods and services are purchased with due regard to economy, effectiveness, and efficiency;
- Implement best practices in corporate governance and risk management, ensuring that the organisation’s activities and reporting meet all legal, regulatory and statutory requirements to facilitate smooth programme delivery;
- Develop strategic alliances to strengthen collaborative partnerships and networks with relevant government agencies, NGO’s and other stakeholders in order to advocate, represent, and influence policies for impact investing; and
- Prepare concept papers, board papers, periodic progress reports and annual reports showing organizational achievements against planned targets.
Requirements
- Be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree from a reputable institution;
- A master’s degree from a reputable institution is preferred;
- Have not less than fifteen (15) years’ working experience of which five (5) years’ should have been served at senior management level;
- Experience working for an international development institution (s) in the Renewable Energy, Agribusiness and Social Enterprise sectors with fluency in global non-profit management is preferred;
- Have the ability to conceive and articulate a strategic vision for the organisation including being able to accurately identify and analyse key challenges likely to face the organisation in the next 3 years;
- Financial literacy including being able to forecast and interpret financials, develop operational budgets and make funding and investment decisions;
- Conversant with comparable business models;
- Strong appreciation of how to grow and scale organizational capability and reach;
- Have the ability to ensure an effective governance and sound ethical climate;
- Demonstrate significant experience and success in fundraising through a combination of individual donors, corporations, private foundations, and bi/multilateral funders;
- Possess strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to balance multiple competing priorities and a willingness to explore new innovative ideas;
- Demonstrate experience of working with a board of directors; and
- Be a collaborative team player with the ability to motivate, positively engage, and earn the trust of donors, staff, management and Board.
