Plant Operators at Nairobi Metropolitan Services Improvement Project (NaMSIP)

Nairobi Metropolitan Services Improvement Project (NaMSIP) is under the State Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development. The Project is part of a metro-wide development initiative and is financed by the National Government of Kenya with support from the World Bank at a cost US$300 million and US$30 from government as counter fund.  The project started on 17th December 2012 and is due for completion on March 31st 2020.

Terms of Service: Two (2) years contract

Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail: –

  • Operating heavy plants of ‘difficult rating’ A and l3;
  • Keeping records of inventory of all plants in a project/unit;
  • Formulating and administering working techniques;
  • Assisting in costing and evaluating small roads and accesses;
  • Preparing maintenance schedules for servicing of machines;
  • Organizing, managing and controlling operators and equipment on a given construction project and unit;
  • Carrying out fitter and oil changes and simple adjustments not requiring special tools; and
  • Assisting in training of plant operators. In addition, the officer will assist in managing staff in implementing programmes approved by the maintenance unit.

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have: –

  • Have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean Grade ‘D’ Plain or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution;
  • A valid driving license free from any current endorsement(s) for relevant class(es) of plants;
  • Passed Occupational Trade Test I for Plant Operators;
  • Ability to operate two (2) Plants of ‘difficult rating’ A and two (2) Plants of ‘difficult rating’ B;
  • Attended a Refresher Course for Plant Operators lasting not less than one (1) week within a period of three (3) years at the Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized Institution;
  • Attended a First-Aid Course lasting not less than one (1) week from St. John Ambulance or Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized Institution; and
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in operating any of the following equipment/plant: forklift, motor grader, shovel, excavator, roller or any other special kinds of plants and equipment for which special authorization is required from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) as defined in the Traffic Act before such plants can be registered for use.
  • Demonstrate outstanding professional competence and integrity in work performance and results
