Helping Women Graduate from Extreme Poverty The BOMA Project is a U.S. nonprofit and Kenyan NGO with a proven track record, measurable results and a transformative approach to alleviating poverty and building resiliency in the drylands of Africa. Our Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) replaces aid with sustainable income and helps women to graduate from extreme poverty by giving them the tools they need to start small businesses in their communities. With this new and diversified source of income, they can feed their families, pay for school fees and medical care, accumulate savings for long-term stability, survive drought and adapt to a changing climate.

Introduction:

The BOMA Project is a fast-growing non-profit in US and a Kenyan NGO that is implementing a high-impact income and savings program for ultra-poor women in the drylands of Africa. We do this through the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), an innovative two-year poverty graduation program for women living in extreme poverty in Northern Kenya.

BOMA helps pastoral women to start small businesses in their communities so they can earn a sustainable income, pay for food and medical care, send their children to school, survive drought and accumulate savings for long-term family stability.

Project Summary: With funding from USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), BOMA Project is seeking to recruit qualified candidates for the Mentors position under Development Food Security Activity (DFSA), entitled NAWIRI (“flourishing”).

BOMA will work closely with consortium partners, county governments, and communities under the leadership of Mercy Corps, to implement this program which has as its overarching goal to sustainably reduce levels of persistent acute malnutrition in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands.

The program is strongly based in the counties, with active engagement across communities, the private sector, and civil society, that seeks to address gender inequalities and social dynamics as key drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition.

Within the program, The BOMA Project will adapt and implement its graduation programming to contribute to NAWIRI’s nutrition goals while building productive and diverse livelihoods in the target communities. BOMA staff will deliver graduation programming directly in Samburu County, while providing technical assistance to Mercy Corps to implement in Turkana County.
