Intern – Environmental Affairs at United Nations Environment Programme

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Law Division internship is for three (3) months with a possibility of extension up to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the Organization’
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 – 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the International Environmental Law Unit the intern is expected to undertake the following tasks:

1. Carry out research on selected environmental law and governance issues, focusing on the fields of environmental rule of law and related subjects. This will include data collection and analysis and presentation in written form, for inclusion into documents, reports, publications or websites.

2. Assist in the preparation and finalization of various materials including correspondence, background papers and briefing notes, and other outreach materials on international environmental law themes.

3. Support the practical and substantive organization of workshops and other meetings organized by the Branch/unit, including under the Montevideo Programme on the Development and Periodic Review of Environmental Law, well as other initiatives planned during the internship period.

4. Participate in internal meetings of the Branch/Unit and the Division, and if necessary, assist in the preparation of minutes.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Studies in environmental law is preferred.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Programme. Are you a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have you completed a degree course?
Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for?
Will you be able to cover the costs of travel, accommodation and other living expenses for the duration of the internship?

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable
