Communications Assistant at Africa’s Voices Foundation

Africa’s Voices emerged out of four years of research at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Governance and Human Rights (CGHR), on Politics and Interactive Media in Africa. With strong interest from initial collaborators, in 2014 Africa’s Voices launched as an independent, non-profit research organisation and registered UK charity. Our core funders and supporters include The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The David and Elaine Potter Foundation, and The Cairns Charitable Trust.

Job Summary

Under the Business Development and External Relations Manager, the Communications Assistant (CA) is overall responsible   for propelling AVF’s brand image through consistent messaging and strategy. The communications assistant manages the development of all external-facing brand communications and collateral and executes the external communications strategy across all relevant channels, including, but not limited to, social media, newsletters, and the website. They also support the external dissemination of Africa’s Voices work by identifying and sustaining relationships with relevant mediums (media, industry fora, publications, conferences etc). The assistant CO is both capable of producing coherent and engaging communications content across all channels and competent in graphic design to support the creation of relevant graphic elements that enhance the work of the programmes (reports, infographics etc).

Responsibilities

  •  Oversees the maintenance of the website and social media, keeping them up to date, attractive and informative.
  •  Sources and develops in house and outsourced marketing material, quality images and video to promote the foundation directly in support of fundraising efforts.
  •  In charge of production of publicity materials, including email updates, newsletters, leaflets,
  • Annual reports, programme briefs and posters to promote the work of AVF.
  •  Reviews, standardises and enhances all written products, creates policy briefs and presentation slides.
  •  Seeks innovative mediums to communicate our impact i.e. contributions in industry publication, collaborations with journalists.
  •  Ensure that annual planning takes place; planners and detailed calendars developed and communication monitored.
  •  Work with colleagues to lead on the sourcing and development of case studies, that can be used to support media and fundraising.
  •  Co-develops and implements the communication strategy.
  •  Works closely with Programme teams to remain informed about project impact and craft relevant content that showcases achievements.
  •  Minute taking and preparing detailed reports on key meetings and events

Selection Criteria

Essential

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferable in a relevant subject, such as Arts, Humanities or Communications
  • Research Expertise and Skills
  • At least two years experience in the following areas:
  • Prior experience in the social impact/non-profit or aid and development sector;
  • Proven graphic design experience and familiarity with design software and technologies (such as InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop);
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills;
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint Word and Excel as well as Google Suite; Experience in social media management
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Working knowledge of Swahili and/or Somali is a bonus.
  • Basic working knowledge of social behavior change communication
  • Personal Attributes and Language Competencies
  • High  levels of energy, initiative, and flexibility in quickly adjusting to changing work requirements.
  • Aptitude for and willingness to work in client-facing contexts, focused on delivering research value-add.
  • Clear and confident communicator of research design and findings to non-specialist and practitioner audiences.
  • Working knowledge of languages relevant to the African context besides English.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of social innovation/ICT
  • Knowledge of African media or media development
  • Exposure to, interest in and some understanding of techniques for analysing textual data such as text mining, topic modelling and supervised machine learning.
  • Technical understanding of user interfaces and digital platforms. Knowledge and understanding of data visualisation techniques. Legal authorisation to work in Kenya
