INTERN – Executive Office Internship x2 at United Nations Human Settlements Programme

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Interns will be required to operate off -site and no travel request will be approved, either as part of on boarding, nor during the tenure of internship.

Interns work as full members of the team, pursue projects that are designed to make a difference in the OED, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations with an overall perspective.Two internship opportunities are offered in these broad areas:

Area 1: Communication and Social Media Intern
Area 2: Urban Affairs Intern

The UN-Habitat Executive Office Internship internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Area 1: Communication and Social Media Intern

Under the Supervision of Special Assistant to the Executive Director the intern will:
– Assist in drafting, editing and preparing communication materials on behalf of the Office of the Executive Director, including social media posts, emails, letters, messaging and outreach material.
– Assist in drafting and reviewing speeches and other background documents.
– Assist in taking and summarizing meeting notes.
– Assist in compiling statistics and undertaking analysis on various issues.
– Assist in the development of a communication strategy for the Office of the Executive Director.
– Assist in the development of the UN-Habitat internal communications strategy.
– Assist in research, drafting and editing of editorial content for UN-Habitat newsletters, magazines and periodicals .
– Support development of UN International Day statements for the Executive Director and follow up to ensure that they have been uploaded into the UN-Habitat website and shared through the Executive Director’s social media platforms.
– Support the Executive Director in promoting her Social Media presence: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and other platforms as directed.
– Monitor the social media profile of the Executive Director and propose responses as appropriate, in close cooperation with Advocacy, Outreach and Communication Branch (External Relations Division) to ensure that the social media profile of the Executive Director is in support of the overall UN-Habitat communication strategy.
– Ensure follow up as appropriate on social media platforms on activities of the Executive Director.
– Undertake a desk review of the scope and potential for social media and public communication needs for the Executive Director in coordination with staff from the ERD.
– Support the organisation, promotion and coordination of UN-Habitat events, assemblies, missions and meetings.
– Liaise with UN-Habitat colleagues in-house on social media requests and needs, propose social media campaigns that showcase the work of UN-Habitat.

Area 2: Urban Affairs Intern

Under the Supervision of Special Assistant to the Executive Director the intern will:
– Assist in conducting research on various aspects of urbanization including urban economy, urban planning and design, urban legislation, urban housing, risk reduction, urban basic services and capacity building.
– Contribute in preparing background documents on various topics on urbanization, the New Urban Agenda, SDG11 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
– Assist in researching and compiling content on urban affairs to be shared on the ED’s social media platforms.
– Assist in preparing and following up on events and meetings.
– Assist in preparing proposals, presentations and contents to be shared.
– Assist in supporting intergovernmental and inter-agency processes.
– Liaise, coordinate and support other units.
– Contribute in developing innovative tools and workflows to improve OED work.
– Perform other research-related tasks/special projects.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD. or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred Area of Studies;

Proficiency in Adobe Design Package including Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Skills in other urban planning and design tools will be an advantage

AREA 1: COMMUNICATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA
International Relations, Global Affairs, Journalism, Economics, Public Affairs, Public Relations, Arts or other related fields.

AREA 2: URBAN AFFAIRS
Urban Planning, Urban Design, Development Economics, Architecture, Development Studies, Geography, Urban Economics or other related social sciences.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Programme. Are you a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have you completed a Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD. or equivalent?

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required.
