Medical Specialist (Urology) at Kenyatta National Hospital

KNH has turned 115 years and it had its Centenary Celebration in 2001. The Hospital was built to fulfill the role of being a National Referral and Teaching Hospital, as well as to provide medical research environment. Established in 1901 with a bed capacity of 40, KNH became a State Corporation in 1987 with a Board of Management and is at the apex of the referral system in the Health Sector in Kenya. It covers an area of 45.7 hectares and within the KNH complex are College of Health Sciences (University of Nairobi); the Kenya Medical Training College; Kenya Medical Research Institute and National Laboratory Service (Ministry of Health). KNH has 50 wards, 22out-patient clinics, 24 theaters (16 specialized) and Accident & Emergency Department. Out of the total bed capacity of 1800, 209 beds are for the Private Wing. Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi is the oldest hospital in Kenya. Founded in 1901 with a bed capacity of 40 as the Native Civil hospital, it was renamed the King George VI in 1952.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Surgery or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • Specialization in Urology or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • MMed or Fellowship specialization in Urology or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • Specialist recognition in Urology from the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • A minimum period ofeight (8)years’relevant work experience,three (3) ofwhich should have been at the level of Senior Medical Officer or comparable position.
  • Registration Certificate by the Medical Practitioners & Dentists Council.
  • Valid practicing license from Medical practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • Valid Professional Indemnity Cover.
  • Evidence in knowledge and proficiency in computer applications.
  • Complied the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya, (2010)

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing patients and instructing in writing all the recommendations;
  • Reviewing patients with urological conditions in the various clinical areas throughout the hospital when consulted;
  • Conducting major ward rounds and post admission ward rounds;
  • Participate in running of Urology Outpatient clinics and theatre days;
  • Participate in training of postgraduate, undergraduate students, and interns of all cadres;
  • Undertaking medical examinations;
  • Preparing medical reports, participating in Medical Board proceedings and undertaking medico-legal duties;
  • Conducting research and clinical audits; and
  • Any other duties as delegated by appropriate authority.
