The World Bank Group’s Health and Safety Directorate (HSD) seeks to protect and promote the health and safety of the World Bank Group (WBG) staff and their immediate families wherever they may be, taking account of their individual health, working environment and job demands. HSD provides advice on health and safety related matters to WBG offices worldwide.
HSD consists of a number of functional units. Among these, the Field Health Services (FHS) team delivers health services to WBG staff and families living in over 120 Country Offices (COs) outside the United States. FHS seeks applications for a locally recruited Field Health Specialist to support the HSD Regional Medical Advisors (HRMAs) located in the Africa region. Each HRMA covers 8-10 countries in East, Central, West, and Southern Africa, respectively. Medical ethics and confidentiality are cornerstones of the Health and Safety Directorate’s work.
Duties and Accountabilities:
- Provide coordination and management of medical evacuations for staff and dependents.
- Provide advice to World Bank Group staff/dependents based in the field on health-related matters, such as travel medicine, pre-relocation health briefings, outbreak response, medical emergency preparedness, and referrals to external health care providers.
- Perform on-call Medical Duty Officer responsibilities on a rotating basis to manage after-hour emergencies, including assistance to ill travelers and any other health emergencies requiring HSD assistance.
- Provide coordination of care for severe chronic diseases for staff/dependents located in the Country Offices in consultation with or under the supervision of HSD physician. This includes facilitating access to care outside the country, promoting patient compliance with the treatment plan, and anticipating the potential need for medical evacuation.
- Design and deliver health education and wellness activities. Liaise with other HSD units to promote a culture of health and safety in the Country Offices. Liaise with the wellness vendor to promote Country Office staff engagement and enrollment in the various health coaching modalities
- Liaise with other HSD units to make sure that complex inquiries in the field of occupational health and safety (e.g., short-term disability, fitness-for-duty, medical clearances, environmental concerns, etc.) as well as mental health are dealt with effectively and efficiently.
- Work closely with colleagues of the HSD multidisciplinary team based in Nairobi to address health risks at the individual and Country Office levels.
- Perform international mission travel to assess medical emergency response, deliver health education activities, visit health care facilities, and address occupational health and safety concerns in the Country Offices.
- Identify and liaise with high quality local and regional health care providers that can be used as contacts for referrals.
- Be proactive in building partnerships with, but not limited to, Benefits, HR, Country Office Staff Association, Security, UN medical teams, International SOS, and Cigna medical teams.
- Contribute to the development of policies and guidelines, as well as written and visual materials to increase awareness regarding important health and safety topics.
- Complete administrative and data reporting requirements, such as maintaining statistics and indicators on services provided.
- Maintain up-to-date, accurate medical records of interactions with clients as well as the advice provided for quality assurance purposes.
- Conduct additional responsibilities as needed or assigned in accordance with applicant’s education, training and experience.
Selection Criteria
Minimum requirements:
- An advanced degree in nursing (Nurse Practitioner, Master of Nursing or Master of Public Health) from an accredited school, or equivalent professional credentials combined with relevant education and experience such as Registered Clinical Officer with a Master’s in Public Health.
- Ten or more years relevant work experience
- Valid and current Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner licensure
- Experience working internationally
- Experience working in occupational health settings is desirable
- Experience working in case management/coordination of care is desirable
- Willingness to travel within the World Bank Group Africa region on a regular basis and occasionally to Washington, D.C.
- Knowledge and ability to counsel staff on health-related issues in a culturally sensitive manner
- Discretion and tact in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive medical information
- Thorough knowledge and use of electronic medical records platforms and IT products, such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Highly effective and proven skills in organizing, prioritizing, scheduling, planning and coordinating work
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills (ability to convey ideas simply and in an engaging style)
- Fluency in English essential; fluency in French highly desirable
- Ability to organize edit and draft a variety of documents
- Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with team members and partners in Country Offices
- Good analytical skills
