In Kenya, Oxfam works with others to alleviate poverty and inequality. We work with the most vulnerable communities in the dry and remote northern regions, and in the impoverished slums of the capital, Nairobi. In Kenya, the highest poverty levels are in the northern pastoralist districts – in some areas 95% of people fall below the poverty line. Like many developing countries, Kenya is undergoing rapid urbanisation. It’s estimated that by 2050 half the Kenyan population will be living in urban areas. This high presents a myriad of challenges. 34% of the 17 million poor Kenyans are urban poor and most of them live in informal urban settlements. Oxfam in Kenya Since starting work in Kenya in 1963, Oxfam has: provided long-term development aid and emergency relief, for example supporting refugees; promoted peace and managed conflicts between communities; campaigned for better governance and equitable access to services. We aim to help citizens stand up for their rights, and we work with others from government, civil society, communities, international development actors and the private sector.
The Role
Oxfam International Secretariat is looking for a Media Officer to join into our four-person media team. You’ll be developing international media strategies and content across Oxfam’s influencing and humanitarian agenda. You’ll be linking your media work up with our campaigns and advocacy, humanitarian, program, social media and fund-raising teams. You’ll be working ultimately with Oxfam teams around the world in delivering this content to their markets.
What we are looking for
You will be a sharp written communicator with great news judgement and a flair for the creative – a storyteller. You’ll prize simplicity and accuracy. You’ll have a strategic understanding of media delivery, including in tandem with social media channels. You’ll have a track record of developing close networks and relationships with colleagues around the world and be aware of their different contexts and supportive of their needs. You’ll know how to minimize and manage risk and how to maximize positive impact. You’ll have at least five years of media experience behind you, with knowledge of non-governmental organizations and other languages a bonus.
What we offer
This is an opportunity to expand your current media experience into an international level. At Oxfam, we believe that every aspect of our work can lead to a positive outcome. If you have the same opinion, together with the ability to meet the challenges involved, this role offers scope for immense personal fulfilment – as well as outstanding opportunities to develop your career. Oxfam is committed to providing a fair compensation package and a flexible working environment.
