P1 Teacher at Shinning Hope For Communities

Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) is a non-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya and New York, NY that combats urban poverty and gender inequity in the slums of Nairobi. Kennedy Odede, who grew up in the Kibera slum, founded SHOFCO in 2004 with a focus on youth and gender empowerment. SHOFCO has four initiative areas: education, health, economic and community empowerment, and water and sanitation. The organization is currently active in the Kibera and Mathare slums of Nairobi.

Job Summary

The teacher will be responsible for creating a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; this is aimed at ultimately developing strong, ethical, community-centered female leaders of tomorrow.

Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions

  1. Teach: Mathematics, Science, Kiswahili / English to students in middle and upper primary.
  2. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
  3. Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  4. Create and use a variety of instruction strategies,
  5. Translate lesson plans into learning experiences.
  6. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  7. Evaluate students’ academic and social growth.
  8. Prepare progress reports and keep records.
  9. Communicate with parents on students’ progress.
  10. Interpret the school program.
  11. Coordinate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  12. Create an effective environment for learning.
  13. Select and requisition books and instructional aids.
  14. Maintain required inventory records.
  15. Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day.
  16. Administer group standardized tests in accordance with school and national testing programs.
  17. Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
  18. Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

Requirements

Academic Qualifications

  1. P1 or Diploma in Education

 Professional Qualifications

  1. Must be registered with Teachers Service Commission
